Tennis Struggles on the Road

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Lamar University picked up a singles victory on court No. 3 but was unable to get any closer falling to Sam Houston State, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center. The loss drops LU to 3-13 (.188) on the season and 1-6 (.143) in Southland Conference play.

The Bearkats picked up the first wins of the afternoon with a shutout decision at court two doubles, but the other two matches were much closer. LU pulled even in doubles when the team of Stephanie Marchena and Natalia Molina defeated Sam Houston's Roos Gerritsen and Sahaja Yamala Palli, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot. Unfortunately, the tight match on court one went in favor of the hosts, 6-4.

Big Red was never able to find its rhythm Saturday as the Bearkats picked up two quick victories on courts one and two singles to take a 3-0 lead. With the Cardinals trailing by three, freshman Amelie Vossgaetter was trying to put an end to the run at No. 3 singles. The Germany native, battled back in her second set against Khee Yen Wee to force a third set. After dropping a 6-4 decision in the opening set, she returned to the court with a hard-fought 7-5 decision in the second.

While Vossgaetter was opening her third and final set, LU was busy trying to force other courts to third sets – LU dropped all six opening singles' sets. Freshman Natalia Molina appeared to be on her way to moving into a third, after dropping a 6-2 decision in the opening set. Molina was unable to hang on getting edged 7-2 in the second set tiebreaker.

The Bearkats would go on to tack on one more victory before LU cracked the scoreboard at No. 3 singles. Vossgaetter recorded an 8-6 decision in the super tiebreak third set to close out the match.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to take on rival McNeese. The match against the Cowgirls will begin at 7 p.m.
