Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southland's two Cardinals – Lamar University and Incarnate Word – squared off Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, with UIW getting the upper hand, 6-1. The loss – LU's second in a row – moves the Cardinals to 3-10 on the season and 1-4 in SLC competition.
"My hats off to Incarnate Word," said LU head coach
David Wong. "They played very tough this afternoon. Four matches went to a third set and they were able to pick up wins on all four of those courts. I thought Coach (Devin) Wilke did a good job preparing his team, and he did a great job keeping them focused."
UIW jumped out of the gate with a commanding 2-0 lead after taking victories in the first three matches of the day. San Antonio's version of the Cardinals won the first two doubles matches – to take the point – forcing the stoppage of play on court two which was unfortunate as LU held a slim one-game lead in that match.
The UIW Cardinals also got the first singles victory of the day with their victory on court one. Big Red managed to battle back at No. 6 singles when Anita Bozhko recorded a 6-4, 6-3, decision over UIW's Rachel Sadiq.
The victory was key for the Red and White as courts 2 – 5 were all headed to a third set, which appeared to be good news for the LU since they won the opening set on only one of those courts. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to pull out wins on any of the courts as UIW rallied to take the final four matches of the day.
The Cardinals will look to close out the current five-match road swing Wednesday when they travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M. The match against the Aggies is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
