Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Lamar University dropped a tough Southland Conference match Saturday afternoon at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi falling 4-3 to the Islanders. Unfortunately for the Cardinals (3-9/1-3 SLC), all of their singles victories came late in the match after the team victory had been decided.
The Cardinals opened the day with a victory at No. 1 doubles putting the focus on court No. 2 for the point, but LU came up just a bit short in the final match as A&M-Corpus Christi took the first point of the day.
The Islanders turned that opening point into momentum which they held on to until the match was decided. A&M-Corpus Christi got victories at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively, to take a 3-0 lead. Without wasting time, the Islanders put the match away with a victory at No. 5 singles.
The loss on court five was an unfortunate setback for the Red and White as they rallied for wins in the final three matches. Sophomore Sanja Jolic put the Cards on the scoreboard with here straight-sets victory on court No. 1. Jolic defeated Hortense Boscher, 6-4, 6-4, in that match.
Jolic's victory started a run for the Cardinals as classmate Jasmin Buchta rallied for a victory on court two. Buchta won her opening set against Corpus Christi's Jelena Dzinic, 6-2, but Dzinic battled back in the second set. Buchta never lost focused and battled back for the three-set win with a 10-4 decision in the super tiebreak.
Freshman Kaela Di Giulio closed out the match with the final victory of the day. She defeated the Islanders' Louise Trigona, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday against Incarnate Word. The match against the Cardinals will begin at 11 a.m. in San Antonio.
