Softball heads to HBU for weekend SLC series

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University Cardinals hope to carry the momentum of Tuesday's 3-2 stunning walk-off win over Eastern Kentucky into this weekend's Southland Conference softball series at Houston Baptist. The teams are slated to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday and a single game at noon Saturday.

The Cardinals (12-12 overall, 0-3 Southland) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to put an end to Eastern Kentucky's 10-game winning streak. It was LU's fourth walk-off win of the season.

"This team never quits," LU coach Holly Bruder said. "That's what I like about this team. I'm hoping that win gives us some confidence for this weekend."

Shortstop Savana Guidry, who played one season at HBU, leads the Cardinals with a .373 batting average. Kelly Meeuwsen, who had the game-winning hit against Eastern Kentucky, is tied with Shelby Henderson for the team lead in home runs and RBIs with three and 14, respectively.

Freshman right-hander Taylor Gruell (3-2, 3.89) and senior righty Laura Napoli (5-7, 4.05) are LU's probable starters this weekend.

The Cardinals, who were swept by host Northwestern State in the season-opening conference series for both teams, will face an HBU (3-12, 0-3) squad that is also looking for its first conference win of the season. The Huskies were swept by visiting Nicholls last weekend.

HBU split a pair of home games on Wednesday, falling to Marist 6-5 before posting a 5-4 win over Eastern Kentucky.

Demi Janak is HBU's offensive leader, posting team-best numbers of a .361 batting average, two home runs and 11 RBIs. Freshman right-hander Jessica Patak (1-7, 3.62) has done a majority of the pitching for the Huskies, throwing 58 of the team's 99 1/3 innings.

ALL-TIME SERIES: LU has a 14-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Cardinals have won each of the last five meetings with the Huskies.

FORECAST: There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms each day, with a 50 percent probability on Friday and a 60 percent chance on Saturday. If the series is pushed back to Sunday, there is a 50 percent chance of rain that day. Highs all three days are expected to be in the 80s.

ON DECK: LU hosts Dartmouth in a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Stephen F. Austin in a three-game Southland Conference series. The Cardinals and Ladyjacks will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. March 23 and a single game at 2 p.m. March 24.
