Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team recorded a split in its doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in San Antonio. The Cardinals opened the day with a 4-2 setback to UTSA, but bounced back in the afternoon match shutting out Laredo Junior College, 7-0. The split moves the Red and White to 3-8 (.273) on the season.
"The match was really close and could've gone either way," said LU head coach
David Wong. "We had two match points at No. 5 singles and on the serve at No. 3 singles. The girls fought hard today. I really like how we put that match behind us and fought back for the win in the second match of the doubleheader."
LU jumped out of the gate quickly winning the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cardinals were unable to take advantage of the momentum as UTSA picked up a victory at No. 6 singles to tie the match at one.
Sophomore Sanja Jolic prevented UTSA from claiming their first lead of the afternoon with her straight-sets victory over UTSA's Denisa Ibrahimovic at No. 1 singles. Jolic was dominant posting a 6-3, 6-2, decision for the point.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they were unable to pick up any more wins as UTSA rattled off consecutive victories on courts 4, 2 and 5 respectively for the overall victory.
The Cardinals didn't allow the setback to affect them in the second match. The Cardinals came out with authority and jumped all over Laredo in doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. LU never took its foot off the accelerator posting straight-set victories on the five singles' courts (the Cards took court six by default). The Cardinals finished off the victory recording six shutout sets.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Incarnate Word in Southland Conference action. The match against UIW will begin at 10 a.m. in San Antonio.
