Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – Abilene Christian took both ends of a tennis doubleheader Monday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Beaumont. The Lamar University women dropped the afternoon match by a final score of 5-2. The setback moves LU to 2-7 (.222) on the season and 1-2 (.333) in Southland Conference play.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals had two bright spots in the form of freshmen Amelie Vossgaetter and Anita Bozhko. The rookie duo both picked up three-set singles wins.
"I'm very disappointed today," said LU head coach
David Wong. "On many of the courts, we just couldn't find a way to keep the ball in play. I don't care how talented you are, if you can't find a way to keep the ball in play you will lose.
"My hats off to Abilene Christian, they simply wanted this more than we did. Our primary focus now is to move forward from this match and get better," added Wong.
It was a tough afternoon for the Cardinals as ACU took the home fans out of the match right from the start. The Wildcats took the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3 respectively to take the early advantage.
ACU carried the momentum over into the singles competition with victories at Nos. 5 and 2 singles, respectively, to build a three-point advantage with four matches remaining. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would tack on a win at No. 1 singles – for the overall win – before the Cardinals could crack the scoreboard.
Big Red got on the scoreboard at No. 3 singles when Vossgaetter defeated ACU's Sarah Adams, 6-4, 0-6, 10-5, in the three sets. The Cardinals closed out the match with another three-set victory on court six. Bozhko picked up that win by ousting the Wildcats' Jordan Henry, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 for the final point of the match.
The Cardinals will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take on UTSA. The match against the Roadrunners will be the first of a doubleheader as the Cardinals will face UTSA and Laredo Junior College.
