Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – In a season that has had more twist-and-turns than a rollercoaster, the Lamar University women's tennis team had to make another adjustment to their 2018 schedule Saturday. Originally slated to play Southern Mississippi in Mobile, the Eagles backed out of the match at the last second forcing the Cardinals to play two against South Alabama. The Jaguars took the first of two matches, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
South Alabama opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. South Alabama pushed that lead to 3-0 before the Cardinals got on the scoreboard. After setbacks at Nos. 3 and 1 singles, respectively, sophomore Sanja Jolic got LU on the board with an impressive 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 2 singles.
The Cardinals were looking to trim the lead down to a single point, but the USA's Patricia Martins put an end to any thoughts of a rally with her straight-sets victory over Milena Belianovich on court No. 5.
USA took a victory at line four singles before the Red and White closed out the match with a victory at the No. 6 position. The victory came from freshman Natalie Molina at No. 6 singles. She defeated the Jaguars' Nikola Kohoutova, 7-5, 7-5, in a hard-fought match.
The Cardinals will be back in action Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against South Alabama.
