Cardinals Prepare to Host UTRGV

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team is looking for consistency when they step on the court Saturday to face UT Rio Grande Valley. The sought-after consistency is not so much in how the Cardinals have been playing but in simply getting an opportunity to play. Due to the rainy weather that has fallen in the Golden Triangle lately, Big Red has had three matches cancelled in the past week.

The one match the Cardinals were able to play during that stretch marked the team's first victory of the season after shutting out Prairie View A&M, 4-0. The Cardinals were dominant against Prairie View, sweeping all three doubles matches, before taking consecutive wins at Nos. 1-3 singles.

For the Cardinals, the victory came after two very tough road matches against Rice and Houston. Despite playing tough, the Cardinals fell short in their opening two matches of the season.

The Cardinals now turn their attention to UT Rio Grande Valley. The Vaqueros enter the week a match under .500 on the season (3-4). UTRGV just had a two-match slide come to an end last Saturday with a 4-3 victory over UTSA.

The Cardinals traveled to Edinburg, Texas last season and picked up 5-2 victory over the Vaqueros, but that was a very different team. Big Red enters this season with a young squad. LU's roster includes six freshmen, two sophomores and just one senior.

Saturday's match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. Should the weather become an issue Saturday, the match will be moved to the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
