LAFAYETTE, La. – Lamar University's
Milena Belianovich teamed with Phonexay Chitdara of Southland Conference rival McNeese to capture the title of the No. 4 doubles draw at the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational on Saturday.
Belianovich and Chitdara were 6-3 winners over Dany Raygadas and Madina Vorotnikova of Southeastern Louisiana.
In other doubles action, The LU tandem of
Jasmin Buchta and
Anita Bozhko claimed third place in the No. 1 draw. Buchta and Bozhko fell to Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic of the host Ragin' Cajuns by a 6-4 score before bouncing back to subdue the South Alabama pairing of Yu Fujioka and Nikola Kohoutova by a 6-3 score in the battle for third place.
At No. 2 doubles, the LU pairing of
Kaela Di Giulio and
Natalia Molina claimed seventh place. Di Giulio and Molina opened the day by dropping a suffering a 6-3 loss to Kelly Drew and Abby Johnson of the Ragin' Cajuns in the consolation semifinals before being awarded a default victory over a team from Southern Mississippi.
The Cardinals also garnered a third-place finish at No. 3 doubles as
Amelie Vossgaetter and
Sanja Jolic cruised past a duo from Prairie View A&M by a 6-2 score. Earlier in the day, Vossgaetter and Jolic dropped a 6-2 to Elzbieta Iwaniuk and Judit Castillo of Northwestern State in the semifinals.
Also at No. 4 doubles,
Priscilla Garza of LU combined with Yasmine Taylor of Southeastern Louisiana to finish fourth.
In singles play, LU's Buchta finished fourth in the No. 1 draw after dropping a marathon 7-5, 1-6, 11-9 decision to McNeese's Giovana Fioretta.
In the No. 2 draw, LU's Bozhko was awarded seventh place with a default win over Laura Oliviera of Southern Miss. In the third draw, LU's Di Giulio finished eighth after falling to Louisiana's Abigail Johnson 6-4, 7-5. Vossgaetter took seventh place in the No.4 draw by defeating Milena Achlamov of the host Ragin' Cajuns 6-3, 6-3.
In the No. 5 draw, Jolic of the Cardinals finished third when UIW's Sara Djurdjevic withdrew while trailing 1-0 in the second set after Jolic won the first set 6-3. In No. 6 singles, Molina brought home fourth place after dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Stella Carr of McNeese.
At No. 7 singles, Belianovich took fourth place after being edged by McNeese's Sofia San Jose 6-4, 6-4. At No. 8 singles, Garza of the Cardinals lost her only match of the event, as Kate McMahon of Louisiana was a 7-5, 6-2 winner.
LU returns to action when it competes at the Southland Fall Invite, scheduled for Oct. 6-8 in New Orleans.
