BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University wasted little time picking up its 11
th victory of the season dispensing of Laredo Community College, 7-0, Friday morning at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. LU took fewer than 20 minutes to score the doubles point and less than two hours two record the victory.
The victory marked the Cardinals' fifth straight and sixth in their seven matches.
The Palominos won only 15 games on the day, with all 15 coming on just five courts. Big Red finished the night with 10 shutout sets.
The Cardinals swept through the doubles competition winning all three matches surrendering just one game at No. 3 doubles. Senior
Talisa Merchiers gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-0, victory over Jennifer Ashley Hundsnurscher on court No. 4. Freshman
Sanja Jolic kept the run going with a straight-sets shutout over LCC's Eileen Gallegos at the No. 4 spot.
The Cardinals got their next two points just missing straight shutouts. Senior
Stephanie Marchena recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, while classmate
Hanna Elfving posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at line five singles.
The Cardinals tacked on one more straight-set victory to build a 6-0 advantage with one match remaining. That match – No. 1 singles – was the closest Laredo came to scoring but ultimately lost that match in three sets.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Conway, Ark. to take on Central Arkansas in Southland Conference action. The match against UCA is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
