BEAUMONT, Texas – After a short trip through the state of Tennessee, the Lamar University women's tennis team (7-4/1-1 Southland) returns home for three matches over the course of the next four days, beginning Saturday with a match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The three matches kick off a four-match homestand that will see the Cardinals in Beaumont for five of their next six.
The Cardinals enter the week having won two of its last three and coming off a split in Tennessee dropping a decision to Memphis, but shutting out Christian Brothers, 7-0. The Cardinals have been unbeatable at home this season with a 4-0 mark in the Golden Triangle.
The Cardinals are currently in a two-way tie for seventh (Abilene Christian) in the Southland standings, but the league's top eight teams are separated by only loss.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is one of two remaining undefeated teams in conference play (Central Arkansas), having lost only one match on the season. The Islanders head to Beaumont looking to defend their 8-1 (.889) start to the season, including a 2-0 start in Southland play. A&M-Corpus Christi comes to Beaumont riding a four-match win streak, with the lone loss coming at SMU.
The match against the Islanders is slated to begin Saturday at noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The Cardinals will step back on the court the following day to take on Incarnate Word.
The Southland's other Cardinals are 3-11 (.214) on the season, and 0-2 to start conference play. UIW is one of just two remaining league schools looking for their first league victory. The Cardinals have dropped five straight, and are coming off a 7-0 decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Big Red will step away from conference action Tuesday when it hosts Omaha. The Mavericks have dropped consecutive matches, and seven of their last eight entering the weekend. Omaha is coming off a 7-0 setback at Kansas State, but that match was played nearly two weeks ago.
The match against the Mavs will begin Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
