Cardinals Record Split in Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lamar University women's tennis team recorded a split in its two matches Wednesday at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The Cardinals opened the day with a 4-1 setback against Memphis before rebounding to post a 7-0 shutout victory over Christian Brothers.

LU (7-4) got a victory at No. 6 singles from senior Hanna Elfving, but that was the only point scored against Memphis as LU dropped a 4-1 decision to the Tigers.

The Cardinals had a lead at No. 2 doubles before the match was halted. Memphis scored the point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively, which was unfortunate as LU's Talisa Merchiers and Stephanie Marchena held a 4-3 advantage over the Tigers Gabrielle Paul and Josephine Cao.

The Tigers pushed their advantage to 2-0 before LU got on the scoreboard with Elfving's victory on court six. Elfving recorded a 6-3 decision in the opening set, and looked even stronger in the second. She ousted Cao in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Big Red appeared to be in position to tie the match at 2 as freshman Jasmin Buchta was up a set over on Paul, and leading 5-4 in the second but she was unable to finish her match as the Tigers picked up wins on courts 5 and 2, respectively, to record the 4-1 decision.

Big Red completely overwhelmed Christian Brothers in the second match winning on all nine courts recording four shutout sets. The Cards held CBU to two or fewer games in eight other sets. By the end of the match, LU had outscored Christian Brothers, 96-20, in terms of the set scores.

The Cardinals swept through the doubles competition to take a quick 1-0 lead and never looked back. Once LU started singles play, the Cards turned to the lower half of the lineup to put match away. Senior Talisa Merchiers, freshman Sanja Jolic and senior Stephanie Marchena surrendered a total of two games in those three matches to lockup the outcome.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference action. The match is slated to begin noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
