BEAUMONT, Texas – After splitting a road doubleheader in the opening week of the season, the Lamar University women's tennis team (1-1) returns to action Sunday with a trip north to face North Texas. The match is slated to begin Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton.
The Cardinals got out to a strong start with an impressive 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M in the opening week of the season. Big Red was so impressive in the opening match only two individual contests went to a third set before picking up the win, and the Cards surrendered just two, or fewer, points in nine of the sets. Things weren't quite as easy in the second match as the Cardinals came up short against a very tough Rice squad.
The Cardinals will look to make it two victories in their first three matches Sunday when they square off against the Mean Green. North Texas comes into the week searching for its first win of the season after a tough start at Oklahoma State. UNT dropped their opening match of the season in Stillwater, Okla., 7-0. North Texas will host Michigan State Saturday at 1 p.m. before turning around less than 24 hours later to take on the Red and White.
The Cardinals are 1-8 (.111) all-time against North Texas and have dropped seven consecutive in the series. The lone LU victory during that stretch came during the 1998 season when the Cards posted an 8-1 decision in Denton. Sunday's match will be the first between the two schools since the 2013 season.
Following the match against North Texas, the Cardinals will return home and have nearly two weeks to prepare for its home opener against Alcorn State on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Lady Braves travel to Beaumont for a doubleheader with the first match slated to begin at 10 a.m. The second match will get underway at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on the LU campus.
