BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team wraps up its 16-game road sojourn this week with two non-conference games at Jackson State on Wednesday and three Southland Conference games over the weekend at Abilene Christian.
The Cardinals (12-9 overall, 2-1 Southland) are 4-7 so far on the road swing. LU opened conference play last weekend by taking two of three games at Houston Baptist.
LU's doubleheader at Jackson State (2-9) is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday. The three-game series at Abilene Christian (9-11, 3-0) opens with a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Friday before concluding with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
"This will be a tough week with a lot of travel," LU coach
Holly Bruder said. "We have to just stay focused and play the way we are capable of."
LU sophomore right fielder
Brittany Rodriguez enters the week riding a school-record 17-game winning streak. Rodriguez leads LU with a .439 batting average.
"Brittany has been incredibly consistent," Bruder said. "She has stepped right in and contributed."
As a team, LU is hitting a conference-leading .324. In addition to Rodriguez,
Kelly Meeuwsen (.390),
Jenna Holland (.380),
Sable Hankins (.344) and
Ashley McDowell (.339) are all batting better than .300 this season.
"We've done a good job offensively so far this season," Bruder said. "We just have to keep it up. We have to do a better job of stepping on not letting up when we have the lead. We have to keep our foot on the gas."
All three games at Abilene Christian will be broadcast
online. There will be no broadcast of the two games at Jackson State.
Following this week's games, LU returns home for the first time since Feb. 21 when they host a three-game Southland Conference series against Incarnate Word. That series opens with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. March 25 before a single game on March 26.
