LU Women’s Tennis Faces Red Wolves

BEAUMONT, Texas – A week after the Lamar University women's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 (.500), the Red and White goes in search of its second win of the season Saturday when it hosts Arkansas State. The Cardinals are coming off a weather-shortened week that saw them record a 5-2 decision over Tyler Junior College. The Cardinals picked up a win in the first match before weather forced LU to cancel its second match.

The week marks the start of the 2016 season for Arkansas State who will open the spring campaign Friday at Southland foe Stephen F. Austin, before making the trip down highway 69 Saturday to take on the Red and White. The Red Wolves are looking to bounce back from a 4-13 (.235) season that saw ASU post an 0-6 mark in Sun Belt Conference play. Arkansas State's victories came against Southeast Missouri State, Missouri State, Kennesaw State and Appalachian State.

The strength of the Cardinals squad right now has been in the final four singles positions, and at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. All of Big Red's wins have come from those positions in the lineup.

The Cardinals would like to start a win streak before opening Southland Conference play at the end of the month. Following Saturday's match, LU will travel to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech. The match against the Lady Techsters will be LU's final non-conference match before opening league play at home against Southeastern Louisiana, followed by matches at Nicholls and McNeese State.

Saturday's match will begin at noon from the Thompson Family Tennis Center. Admission to all matches is free.
