BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior corner
Brendan Langley has received an invite to play in the 2016 Reese's Senior Bowl announced game officials Monday afternoon. Langley receives the honor following a 2016 campaign that saw him earn first-team All-Southland Conference honors as a defensive back and punt returner. It also comes during a year that saw all 32 NFL teams make at least one stop in Beaumont during the 2016 season.
The game is slated to kick off Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. from Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Complete rosters for the senior bowl will be released in January.
A versatile athlete, Langley impacted all three phases of the game for the Cardinals during his two years on campus. Starting his career as a receiver, Langley was shifted to the defensive side of the ball midway through the 2015 season. He wasted no time impacting games from the secondary, recording 21 tackles, 11 pass breakups and picking off a pass.
His lone interception in 2015 was just a small sign of things to come for the Marietta, Ga., native. Langley tied an LU single-game record with three interceptions against southeastern Louisiana as a senior. The three picks came during a stretch that saw Langley record at least one interception in four consecutive games.
Langley ended the season with six interceptions, as the Cardinals led the Southland Conference in pass defense. He finished the year just one interception shy of tying the LU single-season record of seven.
Langley was more than just a threat in secondary as a senior. He also became one of the nation's top threats returning punts as well. He put his big-play ability on display against Incarnate Word this past season where he returned six punts for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 34.3 yards per return against UIW. He shattered the previous single-game mark for punt return yards in a game by nearly 100 yards (118 set by Rondy Colbert in 1973), and was only 35 yards shy of making the school's career top-10 list for punt return yards in that game alone.
Langley becomes just one of five Cardinals to return two punts for a touchdown in a career (Kevin Johnson, Johnny Fuller, Rolbert and Johnny Ray Smith) and is one of two Cardinals (Johnson and Colbert) to have two returned for scores in the same season. Langley sits alone in the LU history books as the only Cardinal to record two punt returns for scores in the same game.
