Chapelet takes 1-shot lead into final round

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Lamar University freshman Elodie Chapelet holds a one-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round of the Bearkat Women's Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State University.

Chapelet, who had her first lifetime hole-in-one during Sunday's practice round, had rounds of 67 and 71 Monday on the par-71, 6,067-yard layout at the Raven Nest Golf Course for a 36-hole total of 4-under-par 138.

"Sunday, I told Elodie she could shoot a 66 here," LU coach Jessica Steward said. "She looked at me like I was crazy, but then she went out in the morning, and was just one stroke shy of that. Her 67 is a great round anywhere."

Chapelet's efforts helped put the Cardinals in third place in the nine-team field heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The Cardinals are at 592, nine strokes behind the host Bearkats' total of 583 and four strokes behind the Houston Baptist Huskies, who are second at 588.

LU's Wenny Chang, who won this event as a freshman in 2013, is tied for ninth at 4-over-par 146 after shooting a 72 in the morning and a 74 in the afternoon. LU's Olivia Le Roux is tied for 13th at 7-over-par 149 after rounds of 74 and 75. Felicia Sauceda of the Cardinal is tied for 32nd at 159, while Maia Jessup is in sole possession of 43rd at 167. LU's Kura Poko, competing as an individual, is 45th in the 56-player field at 174.

Chang and Chapelet each had eight birdies over the first two rounds.

"This course was set up to score today," Steward said. "Although our numbers were OK, we didn't capitalize on the forgiving pin placements."

Chapelet, who is looking for her first career victory, had a one-shot edge over Houston Baptist's Lexi Brooks, who had rounds of 68 and 71, and Houston's Emily Gilbreth, who had a 71 in the first round and a 68 in the second round. Gilbreth is competing as an individual.

As a team, LU is looking for its second title in as many weeks. LU won the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout last week after opening the season with a third-place finish at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational two weeks ago.

The final round is set to get underway at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
