FRISCO, Texas – Senior defensive back
Brendan Langley has been named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. It is the first time this season that Langley has received a conference weekly honor.
"Brandon did a great job of route recognition Saturday," said LU head coach
Ray Woodard. "Two of his picks came off the same play. Brandon has a lot of God-given tools – good height, range, quick feet to go with his speed. A lot of times you see guys with great straight-line speed but can't change directions, or guys who are quick but not great straight-line speed. Brendan has both – great speed and he can change directions. He is also a very smart player to go along with his athleticism."
Langley played a key role in helping the Cardinals pick up their first win of the season. The league leader in interceptions, Langley tied a program record Saturday against the Lions by picking off three passes as the Cardinals held Southeastern Louisiana's offense to 14 points. Two of the three interceptions came on consecutive possessions, and set up LU scores as the Cardinals pulled away from their guests in the second half.
Langley equaled an outcome that has only been seen two other times in program history, and the first time since 1983. The other two Cardinals to record three picks in a game are Donald Rawls (1983 vs. Louisiana Tech) and Pat Gibbs (1971 vs. Arkansas State).
Langley has picked off at least one pass in each of the past two games, and is currently tied for first nationally in total interceptions, and interceptions per game. He is one of only five players to have four interceptions through the first month of the season, and one of just four players to be averaging an interception per contest.
Langley is currently sixth on the team with 20 tackles through. He has recorded 13 solo stops, and has been credited with 1.5 tackles for losses. In addition to his four interceptions, Langley has also broken up three passes.
In addition to being named SLC Defensive Player of the Week, Langley is also a candidate for the FCS Hero of the Week – an award chosen based on fan vote. Fans can support Langley by clicking
