LU QB Receives Southland Honor

BEAUMONT, Texas – The honors continue to pour in for the Lamar University football team following their impressive victory over third-ranked Sam Houston State Saturday. Junior quarterback Carson Earp has been named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The honor comes just 24 hours after running back Kade Harrington was recognized by the league office as the conference offensive player, and as the FCS National Player of the Week.

Making his second consecutive start, Earp guided an offense that racked up more than 550 yards of total offense as Big Red picked up its second win ever in Huntsville, and the first since 1959. It was also the second-highest point total by an LU (2-1/1-0 SLC) squad in series history.

The victory was also the first against the defending Southland co-champions since the sport's rebirth prior to the 2010 season, and is also the highest ranked opponent the Cardinals have defeated during that stretch. LU has now won its last two games against nationally ranked FCS opponents.

Earp finished the contest completing 14-of-25 (.560) passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. His touchdown passes went 4, 19, 77, 18 and 73 yards.

In addition to beating the Bearkat defense with his arm, Earp also found success running the football as well. He carried the ball five times for 59 yards, including a long of 42.

The Cardinals have a week off before returning to action. The Red and White travels to Hammond, La., Thursday Oct. 1 to take on Southeastern Louisiana. The game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. from Strawberry Stadium, and will be televised on the American Sports Network. It would be the third consecutive game where the Cardinals have squared off against a nationally ranked foe (No. 4 Baylor).
