BEAUMONT, Texas – Senior receiver
Reggie Begelton has been named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week announced publication officials Sunday afternoon. It is the first conference weekly honor of Begelton's career.
The school's all-time leader in receptions, Begelton hauled in 10 passes for 96 yards as the Lamar University football team took on the No. 4 ranked Baylor Bears in Waco Saturday. The Cardinals were effective moving the football against one of the nation's top teams. LU finished the night with 340 yards of total offense in a game that was a back-and-forth affair in the opening half. It was the best production from a Cardinals squad against a ranked FBS opponent since the return of the sport.
The Cardinals trailed Baylor by only seven points with less than four minutes remaining in the first half, but BU closed out the half with final score. Big Red opened the second half with a 31-yard field goal before the Bears scored 17 unanswered points late to pull away from an upset-minded LU team.
Already the school's all-time leader in receptions, Begelton's performance put him within striking distance of several other school records. He needs only 76 more receiving yards and six touchdown receptions to become the school's all-time leader in those categories. Begelton also ranks 14
th all-time at LU with 96 points, and sits just outside the school's all-time top 10 with 2,023 all-purpose yards.
He is also on pace to write his name down in the Southland Conference record books as well. He is currently eighth all-time in league history with his 184 receptions, and needs just two more catches to move into sixth place. He needs only 549 more receiving yards and six touchdown catches to move onto the conference's all-time list in those categories as well.
