BEAUMONT – Lamar University track and field jumper Brian O'Bonna took gold in the long jump and silver in the triple jump at the 2015 Canadian National Championships held from Thursday to Sunday at Foote Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The 2015 freshman moves on to compete for Canada in the Pan-American Jr. Championships, set to start July 31.
The Canadian native, who set a personal record early in the summer with a first place finish at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association meet (7.33 meters), claimed the winning mark in his final jump of 7.31 meters. He was in a tight battle with Patrick Hanna who marked in at 7.28.
"We are extremely proud of Brian for this accomplishment. He takes great pride in competing for his country," said track and field head coach
Trey Clark. "It's very clear that he is using the summer to get better, and the marks show that he is."
O'Bonna hit jumps of 6.60 in his first attempt, 6.94 in his second attempt, fouled in his third attempt (7.20) and 6.96 in his fourth jump. His collegiate best was at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, with a 7.24 jump on May 2.
Hanna was the only athlete to beat O'Bonna in the triple jump, who jumped a 14.65 final mark in his last attempt. He missed his personal best of 14.87, which was set in a fourth place finish at the Southland Conference championships.
