Final Stats

BEAUMONT - With an 8-1 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Southland Conference action, the Lamar baseball team was eliminated from postseason contention.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took two games from Incarnate Word on Saturday that gave the Islanders 13 wins in league play, five more than LU's (19-30, 8-18) eight with only four games to play. The loss gave Lamar eight straight and nine in the last 10 contests.

The Cardinals had several opportunities to take control of the game, but were not able to capitalize with a key base knock. In the second inning, back-to-back-to-back singles from Brandon Provost, Kevin Santana and Kyle Markum- who all were honored in Senior Day festivities pregame- loaded the bases with no outs.

Justin Eckols came to plate and fouled off several pitches before he rolled over one for a 1-2-3 double play, and Brendan Satran ended the game on a bunt for a hit attempt. After they fell down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, the Cardinals did answer for one run in the bottom half of the frame.

Satran lined a one-out pitch to the right center cap, and turned on the burners once he hit second base for a triple. Mason Salazar pushed him across with a ground out, and the inning ended on another groundout from Reed Seeley.

Lamar loaded the bases again in the fifth-with one out- but a double play killed that rally. Stephen F. Austin (17-33, 11-17) ran away with it late with one run in the seventh inning, three in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Collin Chapman (0-2) started the game, and gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks in 4.2 frames. Jayson McKinley relieved him in the fifth and retired the first four batter he faced, but ran into trouble in the seventh. He worked 1.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits.

The Cardinals ran through four pitchers after McKinley. Both Cody Laird and Brent Janak worked a full frame, and Brandon Kirkham pitched two-thirds of an inning. Danny Fernandez never recorded an out and allowed one run on three hits.

Dillon Mangham (4-8) earned the win on six innings of work with the one run allowed on eight hits. Travis Stone and Patrick Ledet finished the game for SFA with three hits given up.

Lamar finished the game with nine runners stranded. Salazar, Seeley and Kevin Santana all turned in two-hit days for the Cards.

LU will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1 o'clock.
