O'Bonna leads Lamar in final tune-up

AUSTIN - Freshman Brian O'Bonna finished with two personal records and two top 10 finishes on Saturday at the Longhorn Invitational, hosted by Texas, in what is the final tune-up for the Lamar track and field teams.

Several ranked teams participated in the meet along with Southland Conference programs Stephen F. Austin and Incarnate Word. In the meet were Baylor, Florida State, Akron, Oklahoma, Houston, Loyola, North Texas, Stanford, UTSA, San Jose State, SMU, Texas State, Tulane and Tulsa. The Cardinals finished the day 11th, and the Lady Cards were 13th.

O'Bonna took third place and grabbed six points for the men with a 47-3.75 in the triple jump, which was an outdoor personal record for the freshman. He took 10th place and two points in the long jump. His 23-9.0 mark was also a PR.

He maintained his seventh place standing on the conference list in the long jump and sixth place in the triple.

Louise Webb moved into second place on the Southland Conference list in the 1500-meter run on Saturday. She finished second at the meet, top collegiate finisher, on a 4:25.43 personal best time. Matt Jackson earned the Cards two points on a tenth place finish in the men's 1500 time of 3:50.43.

Alex Dunbar placed third in his first 3000m run of the season, on a 8:33.06 mark, and Blake Johnson finished 10th in the 110-meter hurdles on a 14.84 time.

Trey Burton finished the 100m hurdles with a personal best mark of 14.91, which was 11th place.

Several of the men's 100-meter dash contestants finished with personal records, Jimmy Strubble (10.99), Jair Williamson (10.99), Thomas Lightfoot (11.17), Devon Brown (11.22) and George Orebe (11.41).

Dominique Taylor tied her personal mark and moved into 10th place in the league on a 14.42 mark in the 100-meter hurdles. Michael Lester set a personal record with a 22-1.50 mark in the long jump, and Carissa Hill grabbed a PR in the women's event on a jump of 18-9.25.

TaMar Hicks set a personal mark of 1:54.34 in the men's 800-meter dash.

Next up for the Lamar men's and women's track and field teams is the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships that start on Saturday, May 9.
