Final Results
HAMMOND, La. - Senior Sam Stabler was crowned as the men's co-high point scorer after two gold medal finishes and 26 points on Sunday in the final day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Southeastern Louisiana at the Southeastern Track and Field Complex.
The Lady Cardinals rallied to score 84 points and finished fourth overall, just six points back of Northwestern State. Stephen F. Austin F. Austin edged out Sam Houston State, 148-143.5, for the women's team title.
The Lamar men had a rollercoaster final day falling back to ninth before rallying late to finish fifth overall. The Cards scored 62 points as a team. SFA won the men's title outscoring Sam Houston State, 153.5-139.5.
Stabler took championships in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs. His two titles were two of three that Lamar claimed on the day and seven All-Southland Conference performances. LU finished the meet with five championships and 11 all-league performers.
He was the ninth 1500m and fifth 5K winner from Lamar, and was the back-to-back champion in both events.
The senior bested his own championship time in the 5K by almost 22 seconds on Sunday after he crossed the finish with a 14:33.81 mark. He finished ahead of SFA's Charles Mathenge (14:37.64), and Alex Dunbar took bronze for his 14:52.52 time.
Stabler, along with Verity Ockenden, started the day off with a win in the 1500m. He timed in at 3:53.02, ahead of teammate Federico Gasbarri and his 3:54.78 time. Matt Jackson claimed eighth in the event with a 3:58.34 time.
Ockenden led a Lamar one-two sweep of the women's 1,500. She crossed the finish line with a time of 4:29.00 to win the individual title by more than two seconds. The junior was the sixth Lady Cardinal to win the event and first since Clerc Koenck in 2008.
The runner challenging Ockenden for the gold was teammate Louise Webb, who finished 2.24 seconds back of Ockenden to take second-team All-Southland Conference honors. Ockenden and Alexandra Sokolova scored five points for LU in the women's 800 meters. Ockenden finished sixth in the event with a time of 2:13.91, while Sokolova was seventh (2:14.77).
Evelyn Chavez posted the third all-conference performance for the women Sunday with her second-place finish in the women's 5,000-meters. Chavez recorded a time of 17:37.78 just missing an individual title. Ockenden finished sixth in the race (18:12.45) to give Lamar 11 points in the team standings.
The Lady Cardinals put five points up on the board early when the team of Chanissey Fowler, Deja Phillips, Dominique Taylor and Sarah Shim clocked a fourth place time of 46.14 to win their section of the 4x100-meter relay.
Shim finished fourth in the women's 400-meter on a time of 56.51, and Fowler clocked a personal best time of 11.71 in the women's 100-meter dash. Shim also joined with Nia Davis, Bianca Allen and JaLana Owens in the 4x400-meter relay for a fifth place finish and 3:52.72 time.
Trey Davis recorded a 52.62 time in the men's 400-meter for fourth place, Brendan Langley timed at 10.69 for eighth place. Trey Davis finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles on a 16.67 mark.
For student-athletes who have qualified, the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West preliminary round is slated for May 28-30 in Austin. The NCAA Championships are scheduled to be held in Eugene, Ore., on from June 10-13.
