BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar track and field teams pulled out several top 10 finishes on their way to taking 10th place at the 33rd Annual Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice, on Saturday at the Wendel D. Ley Track.
The men's side featured 21 teams and the women's side 17, both the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals finished 10th in the event. Brian O'Bonna, Jared Benford and Erin Brown each claimed two top 10 finishes Saturday.
O'Bonna claimed third in both the long and triple jumps. He put up a mark of 22-11.25 in the long jump, and finished behind Rice's Ben Pressley (23-0.50) and McNeese State's Kartavious Hamilton (23-0.00). In the triple jump, O'Bonna marked at 46-11.50 behind Ian Williams (48-0.75) and Derran Hayes (46-11.50), both from Texas Southern. The freshman accounted for 12 points to the men's side.
Benford finished seventh in long jump after a mark of 22-7.25 and second in the 100-meter dash on a time of 10.69. He finished in a tie with Houston's James Arnett, but took the eight points due to wind.
Brown jumped 18-2.25 in the long jump and claimed fourth place, and then followed that with an eighth place jump in the triple jump with a 36-2.00 mark. Her fourth place finish in the long jump gained the Lady Cardinals five points.
Sarah Shim claimed fifth place in the 400-meter run on a time of 56.46, a little over a second behind Houston's Mayorca Young's first place mark of 55.25. Shim earned LU four points. Alexandra Sokolova earned the Lady Cardinals three points on a sixth place finish, 2:13.38, in the 800-meter run. Tierra McGowan was the women's 800m champion with a 2:09.53 time.
Chanissey Fowler, Dominique Taylor and Brook Wilson all earned eighth place finishes in their individual events. Fowler finished the women's 100m dash in 12.18 to notch a point for Lamar. Taylor ran the 100m hurdle in 15.15, and Wilson marked the 400m hurdle in 1:04.01.
Shim, Taylor, Fowler, and Sydney Wandix joined forces to claim fifth place in the 4x100m relay on a time of 46.65, and the men's team- made up of Thomas Lightfoot, Brendan Langley, Benford and Trey Davis- also took third. It timed in a 41 seconds flat.
Langley notched ninth place in the 100m dash on a 10.94 time. Tobias Riker claimed seventh and two points in the 800m run with a mark of 1:52.33. A 17-4.25 long jump gave Carissa Hill 10th place on the women's side.
JaLana Owens set a personal record in the women's 400 on a 17th place finish, and Lightfoot did the same in the 100m dash on a 27th place mark of 11.31.
Louise Webb competed at the Stanford Invitational and took sixth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase time of 10:35.48.
The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals will run again on Saturday at the McNeese Invitational.
