BEAUMONT - The Lamar women's tennis team jumped out early, but Stephen F. Austin battled back to claim the Southland Conference match, 5-2, on Sunday during Senior Day at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

SFA (17-6, 11-1 Southland Conference) did win the doubles point, but Lamar (9-11, 3-7) claimed four of the six first sets in singles action. Despite that, the Ladyjacks mounted a comeback in three and finished off four of the singles matches.

Katya Lapayeva won her fifth-straight singles match in straight sets over Malena Gordo, 7-5, 6-3, from position one. The win evened her record to 10-10 this season.

Lamar's lone senior in Carolina Maso, who was honored between the singles and doubles matches, took her team-leading 11th match of the season from line four over Dhanielly Quevado, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Both Lapayeva and Maso fell to Gordo and Quevedo on the No. 1 doubles, 8-6.

Andrea Ivanovic and Anna Spengler downed Juila Lorca and Denise Maxl on No. 2 in doubles action. That team improved its record to 8-5 on the season. Spengler took her first set over Maxl 2-6 in singles, but Maxl answered with wins in the sets two and three, 6-4, 7-6.

Stephanie Marchena dominated Valeria Terentyeva in the first set with a 6-0 win, but SFA's fifth court player took the last two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Hanna Elfving won set one versus Lorca 6-4, but Lorca battled for a 6-3, 6-2 win on No. 6.

Vivienne Kulicke defeated Andrea Ivanovic 6-3, 6-1 on court two in singles action.

The Lady Cardinals host Northwestern State at 11 o'clock Monday morning at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
