NEW ORLEANS, La. - Anna Spengler and Hanna Elfving took singles action wins on Saturday, but New Orleans prevailed with a 5-2 win over the Lamar women's tennis team in the Lady Cardinals' Southland Conference opener.
Spengler improved her season mark to 5-3 on the season in single play with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Anja Luethi on court two, and Elfving moved to 4-1 this season on a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win on court four over Yasmine Rashad. Elfving is undefeated in 2015 on court four.
The Privateers took the early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point on win in position one and two. Marta San and Soledad Calderon downed Carolina Maso and Katya Lapayeva, 8-2, and Spengler and Andrea Ivanovic fell to Luethi and Anna Segarra on court two.
The match on court three between Hafsa Laraibi and Yasmine Rahsad from UNO and Stephanie Marchena and Elfving went unfinished.
Lapayeva fell to Calderaon in three sets, one tiebreaker, from court one, 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-2. Sans got by Ivanvoic, 6-2, 7-6 (3) on the third line. Segarra and Maso took it to three sets, but Segarra was victorious 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The final decision of the contest was Lara Delli Castelli's 6-1, 6-1 loss to Laraibi on court six.
The Lady Cardinals continue Southland Conference play on Sunday against Southeastern Louisiana at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. Nicholls pays visit to the Thompson Family Tennis Center on March 14 and McNeese State on March 15.
