AUSTIN, Texas - Five runners from the Lamar men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 88th running of the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Thursday, the first day of collegiate competition, at Mike A. Myer Stadium.
Verity Ockenden and Alexandra Sokolova took part in the 800-meter run, and finished fourth and fifth respectively. Ockenden timed in at 2:10.04 and Sokolova at 2:16.74. Ockenden was one-tenth of a second from third place and 55-hundreths from second place. Kendra Chambers, unattached, took the championship on a 2:06.57 mark.
Evelyn Chavez was took ninth place in the 1500-meter run on a time of 2:16.74 on Thursday, and was just over a second from eighth place. Lilian Koech of UTEP won the event after she marked at 4:32.03. Chavez was scheduled to run in the 5000-meter, but was scratched.
Both Tobias Riker and Stuart Ferguson competed in the men's 1500m, and took eighth and 10th, respectively. Riker beat his season best, set last week at the Louisiana Classics, on a 3:56.20 time. Ferguson marked in at 4:07.32.
Anthony Rotich (UTEP) won the event with a 3:46.58 time.
Six athletes and one relay team are expected to compete on Friday morning. Sarah Shim and Trey Davis will take part in their respective 100-meter dashes at 9:35 Friday morning, and will be followed by Chanissey Fowler and Dominique Taylor, running in the 100-meter hurdles, and Trey Burton and Blake Johnson, running in the 110-meter hurdles.
Shim put up a 10th-place time of 12.42 in the 100m at the Louisiana Classics Saturday, and Davis marked in at seventh place on a 10.99 time. Taylor was fifth in the 100m hurdle at the event (14.51), and Fowler will be competing in the event for the first time collegiate career.
Burton finished eighth in the Louisiana Classics in the 110m hurdles on a 15.21 time, and Johnson clocked in just ahead with a 15.10 mark, which netted him seventh place.
The Lamar women's 4x100m team that consists of Shim, Fowler, Taylor and Sydney Wandix will run at 9:35 Friday morning just before the dashes and hurdles.
There are a number of parking garages within walking distance of Myers Stadium, and the parking charges are $12. Fans wishing to attend are also able to pre-purchase parking at TexasSports.com. Single-day tickets went on sale Monday, and all-session tickets are also available for $40 reserved and $20 general admission.
There is no charge to get into Thursday's events, but it is $20 per day Friday and Saturday to sit in the reserved seating and $10 for general admission.
