Box Score March 15, 2015

Final Stats

CONWAY, Ark. - Central Arkansas used a three-run first inning in the opening game and a six-run second in the night cap to sweep the doubleheader 4-2 and 8-0 and swept the Lamar baseball team in a three-game Southland Conference series hosted at Bear Stadium.

In the first game, back-to-back, one-out doubles from Joe Arechiga and Jake Nash gave Lamar a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but a three-run bottom of the frame gave Central Arkansas a 3-1 cushion.

Braxton Phillips led off the inning by reaching with a throwing error by Stijn van der Meer. He scored after a sacrifice bunt by Chris Townsend and Nate Ferrell single into left center. Ferrell reached second on a single a batter later in Travis Hull. Matt Anderson pushed both across on a double to left field.

The score remained 3-1 until seventh inning. Lamar starter Chase Angelle (1-3) could never get a 1-2-3 inning, but was able to dance in and out of danger until he was pulled. He worked 6.1 innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits and three walks.

Angelle allowed a leadoff triple to right field by Wesley Hoover in the seventh, and he scored when Phillips roped a single into left field.

Lamar challenged to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Kevin Santana reached on wild pitch after he struck out, and advanced to second on another wild pitch. Reed Seeley drew a walk to put Cardinals on first and second, and with one out Brendan Satran singled to left to push across Santana.

Two batters later, Mason Salazar singled through the left side to load the bases, but new pitcher Bo Stitch entered the game and struck out van der Meer to end it.

Angelle took the loss and Kyle Leggett relieved him in the seventh and worked 1.2 innings with only one hit and one walk allowed. Brandon Hagaerla (3-0) took the win on 8.1 innings of work, and he gave up two runs on six hits and two walks.

Both Derek Beier and Stitch each worked one-third of an inning to finish out the game.

As has been the case for much of the season in Lamar's losses, a big inning bit the Cardinals in game two and aided UCA to the win. Just after a one-out single by Anderson in the second, Logan Preston blasted a two-run shot to left field.

With two-outs Tyler Langley continued the inning with a single up the middle, and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Bears. Ferrell doubled down the left field line to score two, and he scored with Townsend, one of the walks, on Hull's single to right field.

Townsend made it 8-0 in the third inning on a single into right center that scored Hoover and Langley. Hoover singled with one out and Langley followed him with a walk.

Eric Foshee (1-3) started the game for Lamar, and lasted 1.2 innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and two walks. Derek Wade relieved him and gave up two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Brett Brown pitched two-thirds of an inning and Joe Farley 1.2 frames, both allowed one hit.

Enrique Oquendo, Tyler Moore and Brent Janak all pitched an inning to close out the game. Oquendo allowed one walk and Moore and Janak each allowed one hit.

Arechiga and Nash both finished with three hits apiece, Nash had a run batted in and Arechiga scored one. Satran, Justin Eckols and CJ Moore all had two hits in the combined efforts.

The Cardinals play a two-game, non-conference series at Nicholls on Tuesday at 6 o'clock and 3:00 on Wednesday. They return to league action on Friday to open a three-game set at New Orleans.
