EDINBURG, Texas - Texas-Pan American used a five-run eighth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit and took down the Lamar baseball team 5-2 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Friday night in non-conference action.
The Cardinals (6-3) will try to even the three-game series at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, and the series finale is slated for noon on Sunday.
UTPA (6-4) opened the eighth inning with four walks in five plate appearances to score a run and leave the bases loaded for Logan Landon's two-run double that turned the Broncs 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 lead. Manny Loredo followed him with a single that scored runners from second and third and pushed the score to its final of 5-2.
Cardinal starter Danny Fernandez held the Bronc offense at bay for 6.1 innings. He allowed five hits and two walks, but never surrendered a run and struck out five. He forced Jacob Huckabay into a groundout, but was pulled from the contest after Landon hit his first double to right center and Loredo's single up the middle.
Fernandez allowed only one baserunner in the first three innings. He worked himself out of a jam in the fourth inning after a leadoff single to Jesus Garcia. Garcia was caught stealing just before a walk to Victor Garcia, Jr., who was cut down on a fielder's choice. Until the seventh inning, Fernandez only allowed runners to touch third twice.
He was relieved by Kyle Leggett, who stranded both runners with a strikeout and groundout. Legget was replaced in the eighth by Joe Farley, who accounted for two of the first four walks of the frame. Galen Andrews followed Farley and gave up the last two walks of the inning, and Enrique Oquendo gave up the eventual game-winning hit.
Andrews took the loss on 11 pitches, two walks and two earned runs.
Big Red scored its first run on a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning. Tyler Sullivan led off the frame with a double to right field and advanced to third on a bunt single from freshman CJ Moore. Two batters later, Reed Seeley drew a five-pitch walk, and Brandon Provost followed him with another five-pitch walk.
The second run of the game came in the Lamar's frame of the eighth inning. Sullivan led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week Stijn van der Meer pushed him across on a full-count single to left field.
Pan American starter Blake English lasted into the eighth inning and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks. He had 10 strikeouts. Brandon San Nicolas relieved him, but did not record an out before Johnny Gonzalez took over and immediately record two out.
English was retired the Cardinals three up, three down in five of his seven full innings. He surrendered only one hit, in the third inning, through six innings.
Andrew Padron record the save in the ninth inning, he only allowed one walk.
