HOUSTON, Texas - The Lamar men's and women's track teams brought home several top five finishes, which included Sam Stabler's first place and Stuart Ferguson's second place finishes in the mile run, at the University of Houston Indoor Opener hosted at Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday.
Stabler, the men's cross country champion, finished with a 4:05.05 mark in his run, which took third place in the all-time school record book, and Ferguson timed at 4:18.27. Along with Stabler and Ferguson, newcomer Evelyn Chavez finished second in the mile run on the women's with a time of 5:06.31.
Chavez finished two seconds behind unattached Emily Fields.
Both distance medley teams finished second in the meet. The men, comprised of Tye Norman, Ferguson, Tobias Riker, Aaron Bennett and Federico Gasbarri, finished in 10:53.83, just behind conference member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and just ahead of Stephen F Austin.
The Lady Cards, featured with Bianca Allen, Olivia Smith, Ja Lana Owens and Sarah Shim, timed at 12:31.67. They finished three seconds behind Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State and 13 seconds ahead of Stephen F. Austin.
Erin Brown and Nicole Alozie finished back-to-back (fourth and fifth) in the long jump, and both had best marks of 17-feet, 11.50 inches.
Trey Davis marked a time of 22.80 in the finals of the 200-meter dash to place fourth, and Dominique Taylor timed at 9.00 to take sixth in the women's 60-meter hurdles. Taylor's mark of 8.97 in the semifinals tied for fifth place in the 60m hurdles in Lamar's record book. Davis' 6.96 mark in the 60m dash placed him fourth in the record book.
Lamar will return to the track on Jan. 16 to take part in the Texas A&M Invitational at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
