HOUSTON, Texas - The Lamar women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2015 season on Sunday when it dominated in-state rival Prairie View A&M, 6-1, in non-conference action.
"I am very pleased with our performance today," said head coach David Wong. "We had to fight through some adversity, but that can happen when you have a young team. We have to work the nerves a little better, but you do that by playing matches like today."
The Lady Cards (1-2) jumped out to a hot start winning every match and claiming the doubles point over PVAMU (0-2). Senior Carolina Maso and Andrea Ivanovic downed Taylor LeFridge and Sydney Lackey (6-4), and Stephanie Marchena and Anna Spengler defeated Sydney Thomas and Ruhl, 6-2. The final doubles match saw Katya Lapayeva and Hanna Elfving blow by Maria Lackey and Fellows, 6-0.
"Our doubles were solid all around today," said Wong. "Our top spot felt a little pressure during its play, but they were able to get through and pull out a win."
Maso was the led the way in singles play when she dominated Ruhl, 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth spot. Elfving was right behind over M. Lackey, 6-0, 6-1, from the fifth spot and Marchena beat Fellows, 6-1, 6-2 sixth spot.
Ivanovic downed Thomas from second spot 6-2, 7-5 and Spengler got past S. Lackey, 6-3, 6-1.
Prairie View's lone point came from LeFridge's win over Lapayeva in the top spot, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
"This match will help us down the road," said Wong. "It was a win, and our young team will be able to look back and use the experience."
Lamar returns to the courts on Feb. 8 when it hosts a double-header with Alcorn State at the Thompson Family Tennis Courts.
