BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar women's tennis team made a run for a comeback, but UTSA was able to hold when the Roadrunners defeated the Lady Cardinals 5-2 at the Thompson Family Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Stephanie Marchena and Anna Spengler won their doubles match to even the doubles point to 1-1, but UTSA (1-1) grabbed the point when Nicole Karaklis and Lina Hallgren took down Hanna Elfving and Katya Lapayevea on a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). Spengler downed Jacobea Junger and Alena Schichkova, 6-4.
Spengler added another win on her day in the fourth slot when she defeated Daniela Garcia-Davis, 6-2, 6-2. Lapayeva won her match in the second spot, 7-6 (1), 6-3, over Shichkova.
Junger defeated Andrea Ivanovic, 6-3, 6-0, and Karaklis beat Carolina Maso, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. From the no. 5 spot, Hallgren downed Stefanovic, 6-2, 6-3, and Irene Gandara Gonzalez overcame Marchena in the no. 6 spot, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
The Lady Cards take the courts again on Sunday when they take on Prairie View A&M in a double-header that starts at 11 o'clock in Houston.
