HOUSTON, Texas - Nationally-ranked Rice swept the Lamar women's tennis team, 7-0, on Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in the Lady Cardinals' 2015 season opener.
No. 21 Rice (1-0) jumped up early when LU's (0-1) Carolina Maso and Andrea Ivanovic fell to Natalie Beazant and Liat Zimmerman, 5-3. Anna Spengler and Stephanie Marchena lost to Alison Ho and Lindsey Hodge, 6-3, and Katya Lapayeva and Hanna Elfving dropped their doubles set to Stephanie Nguyen and Katherin Ip, 6-2.
The Owls swept through the singles matches, all in straight sets. Beazant defeated Ivanovic in the No.1 spot, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 6 slot, Savannah Durkin worked past Elfving, 6-2, 6-1, and Maso fell to Zimmerman in the No.3 spot to give Rice a 4-0 lead.
The No. 5 spot had Hodge with a win over Teodora Stefanovic, 6-2, 6-1. Spengler fell to Ho in the fourth slot, 6-1, 6-2, and Ip rounded it out in the second spot with a win over Lapayeva, 6-2, 6-4.
The Lady Cardinals return home on Sunday to take on UTSA at 11 o'clock in the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
