Stabler finishes second at Rice

HOUSTON - Sam Stabler's second-place finish highlighted the efforts of the Lamar men's cross-country team at the 39th annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational on Friday.

Stabler covered the 5,620-meter course in 17 minutes, 2 seconds. Brian Barraza of Houston was the top collegiate finisher in 16:57.

Lamar received a strong effort from freshman Federico Gasbarri, who was 16th in 17:39. As a team, the Cardinals placed eighth in the 14-team field with 194 points. McNeese State won the team title with 51 points, while the host Rice Owls were second with 76 points.

The Cardinals return to action when they compete at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 20.
