BEAUMONT – The Lamar baseball team may have drawn first blood on Sunday afternoon, but Houston Baptist rallied for 22 hits to hand the Cardinals a 13-2 loss at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The loss, which was the final home game of the year for the Red and White, dropped LU’s overall record to 28-20 and 13-11 in Southland Conference play. Houston Baptist improved to 22-22 and 11-13, respectively.

Will Hibbs was given the start on the mound for LU, and after a solid first five frames, surrendering a pair of runs in the third, the Huskies got to him for three more in the sixth to take control of the game. The 6-foot-7 right-hander out of Friendswood ended the day with five earned runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings of work. He fell to 4-3 on the season.

Kevin Santana and Kyle Markum were two of seven Cards to record a hit on the day, and the former was the first to touch home in the game, scoring on a second-inning Justin Eckols sacrifice fly. After HBU took the lead in the ensuing frame, Jacoby Middleton brought home Jude Vidrine with a sac fly of his own.

After the three-run sixth put HBU ahead once more, the Huskies would score three more off of Derek Wade in the seventh and five (one earned) off of Lance Warren in the ninth to secure the series victory. It marked the first series that LU had lost since the end of March.

The Cardinals will return to action with road series over the next two weekends, heading to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Oral Roberts.
