Women's Tennis snaps skid

SAN ANTONIO - Three freshmen picked up singles victories to lead the Lamar women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word at Mabry Tennis Center.&nbsp;

With the win, LU improved to 5-10 on the year and snapped a three-match losing streak. The Lady Cards hold a 2-4 Southland mark. UIW is 0-8 in league play and 4-15 overall.

Katya Lapayeva led the first-year group for the Red and White, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Andi Botha at No. 4 for her 10th win of the season. Hanna Elfving was also dominant, beating Kelsey Reblin 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth spot, and Anna Spengler won 6-1, 6-0 over Christina Rodriguez at line six.

Dariya Dashutina was the only veteran to pick up a win, handing Sarah Savedra a 6-3, 7-5 decision at the top of the lineup.

Both Carolina Mas&oacute; and Alicia Porte fell in three set tie-breakers. Mas&oacute; fell 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 to Ivana Katavic, and Porte lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 to Jennifer Betancourt. The duo was more successful in doubles, winning 8-6 over the tandem of Katavic and Botha at the top spot.

In other doubles action, Betancourt and Savedra beat Dashutina and Elfving 8-6, and the duo of Lapayeva and Spengler were strong in an 8-2 defeat of Reblin and Brianah Creek.&nbsp;

The Lady Cards will return to action with a match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday.
