BEAUMONT – The Lamar women’s tennis team snapped its three-match losing skid in impressive fashion on Saturday, handing visiting Prairie View A&M a 7-0 loss at Thompson Family Tennis Center.
“I’m really pleased with the way that we played today, and hopefully it will help get us back to the level that I think that we can play,” head coach David Wong said. “We put up some good scores, and I’m impressed with Dariya’s win at No. 1. The top girl for Prairie View just beat the No. 1 player at Arkansas last week.”
Dariya Dashutina, a senior out of Ukraine, dropped her opening set to Taylor LeFridge, but bounced back in dominating fashion to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 and earn her fourth singles victory of the season.
It was also a dramatic match at No. 2 singles, but Carolina Masó was able to hold on for a 6-3, 6-7, 11-9 win vs. Brittany Harrell.
The other four singles matches would be decided by the score of 6-0, 6-1 in favor of the Lady Cards. Alicia Porte beat Christine Ngo Gwodog at the No. 3, and Hanna Elfving picked up her second win of the year at No. 4, beating Donielle Richard. Katya Lapayeva improved her team-best victory total to seven with a win over Sydney Thomas in the fifth spot, and Nadiya Kulibaba rounded out the performance by handing Maria Lackey a loss at line six.
In doubles, Elfving and Dashutina out-classed Lackey and Thomas with an 8-1 victory, and the duo of Lapayeva and Anna Spengler won 8-3 over Gwodog and Richard.
The Lady Cards (4-7) will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on UAB at Thompson Family Tennis Center.
