EL PASO – On Saturday, the Lamar women’s tennis team picked up a number of tight victories across the board, but it was a different story on Sunday, as the close decisions went UTEP’s way in a 6-1 loss to the Miners at El Paso Tennis Club.
UTEP picked up the early momentum by sweeping doubles for the match’s first point. Matilda Rose Tench and Gabi Vazquez got it started with an 8-3 decision over Anna Spengler and Katya Lapayeva, and the duo of Marie LeBlond and Daphne Visscher clinched it by beating Dariya Dashutina and Hanna Elfving 8-2.
Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó fought hard at No. 1 doubles, but ultimately bowed out to Rebecca Calvillo and Davina Meza 8-7 (7-5).
Lapayeva was the first Lady Card to fall in singles, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Tench at No. 6. LeBlond beat Masó 6-1, 6-2 at the third spot, and Meza clinched it with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Porte at line two.
Two other matches would go three sets as Dashutina fell 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to Calvillo, and Elfving lost 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 to Vazquez.
Spengler was the lone LU winner on the day, doubling her season win total with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Visscher.
The Lady Cards (2-3) will return to action next weekend with a match against Louisiana Tech, which will also serve as the home opener for LU at Thompson Family Tennis Center.
