Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's hoops stopped by Sooners

Nov. 18, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. - Dominique Edwards had her second double-double in as many nights, but the Lamar Lady Cardinals dropped a 100-73 decision to Oklahoma in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday.

Edwards had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Lamar (0-3), as she collected her 13th career double-double, but it wasn't enough against the Sooners (2-0), who pulled away in the second half.

"Dominique is stepping up," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "She is playing like an all-conference player, and she is being a leader."

Lamar held an eight-point lead at one point in the first half, and trailed just 50-43 at intermission, but the Sooners opened the second half on a 25-2 run to take control of the game.

Shauna Long had 18 points for Lamar. Long drained four 3-pointers on the evening, giving her 123 for her career, as she tied Nikki Williams for fourth on the all-time Lamar list. Baileigh O'Dell had 14 points, as the freshman scored in double figures for the third time in as many games.

Sharane Campbell led Oklahoma with 16 points, as she was one of four Sooners to score in double figures. Peyton Little had 14 points, LaNesia Williams had 13 points and Derica Wyatt finished with 12 points.

The Sooners shot a sizzling 53.9 percent (41-of-76) from the field, as they got a lot of good looks at the basket. The Sooners had 28 assists on their 41 field goals. The Sooners snapped Lamar's streak of holding opponents to less than 100 points at 282 games.

Oklahoma won the rebounding battle 42-33 and took advantage of Lamar's 23 turnovers, scoring 23 points.

"I saw a lot of good things," Harmony said. "We're making some mistakes, but those are things we can fix. Our players are playing with a lot of heart. "We started two freshmen and two sophomores, and we're getting freshmen contributing off the bench. The future is bright for Lamar basketball."

Lamar returns home to host UTSA at 2 p.m., Sunday in the Montagne Center. Tickets are available online at www.LamarCardinals.com, or from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Montagne Center ticket office, or by calling (409) 880-1715. Tickets will also be available one hour prior to game time.
