Nov. 23, 2014BEAUMONT, Texas - Freshman April Levy had a pair of career highs for the Lamar Lady Cardinals in a 72-40 loss to visiting UTSA in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday afternoon.
Â
Levy came off the bench to contribute seven points and four rebounds for the Lady Cardinals (0-4), but Lamar couldn't overcome early foul trouble and cold shooting.
Â
"We need to change our ways," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "It hurt when Dominique Edwards got in early foul trouble. How Dom goes, we go. We have to find that person who is going to lead when Dominique isn't on the floor."
Â
Edwards, who was coming off back-to-back double-doubles, picked up two quick fouls, and played just three minutes in the first half as Lamar fell into a 33-17 deficit at intermission. Edwards finished with two points and one rebound in 16 minutes for the game.
Â
Shauna Long led Lamar with eight points off the bench. Long drained a pair of 3-pointers to give her 125 for her career, putting her in sole possession of fourth place on Lamar's all-time list. Danyelle Grimes is third with 131 treys.
Â
Kianda Bowers had six points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
Â
UTSA (2-1) received 16 points and nine rebounds from Tesha Smith. Kamra King added 12 points for the Roadrunners.
Â
The Lady Cardinals trailed by just two points, 8-6, with 13:54 remaining in the first half before UTSA went on a 10-0 run to build an 18-6 lead with 11:05 left in the half. Lamar got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Â
"Today should be an eye-opener for us," Long said. "We need to work hard in practice, and carry that over into the games. We know we're a better team than this."
Â
Freshman guard Baileigh O'Dell, who scored in double figures in each of her first three games, had four points for Lamar on Sunday, but collected a career-high four rebounds. Freshman Lejha Smith also had a career-best four rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
Â
Lamar looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to Texas State at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a non-conference game. The Lady Cardinals return home to host St. Thomas (Texas) at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 and Huston-Tillotson at 7 p.m. Dec. 2.
