HOUSTON – Sam Bumpers had two hits on Wednesday evening, but unfortunately for the Lamar baseball team, the rest of the line-up was not as effective as the Cardinals fell 6-1 to No. 18 Rice at Reckling Park.
Bumpers ended the night 2-for-4 with a run. Darian Johnson, Seth Dornak and Garret Autrey also picked up hits, but as a whole the Cards were out-hit 11-5.
Eight different Cards saw action on the mound, with Lance Warren getting the start and pitching a scoreless first and second inning. Brett Brown surrendered three runs in the third to get pegged for his second loss of the year, and J.T. Autrey also gave up three scores in the fifth.
For the Owls, Blake Fox picked up the win by tossing a two-hit five innings, improving to 5-0 on the year. Offensively, both Christian Stringer and Geoff Perrot had three-hit outings, combining for two scores and two runs batted in.
Rice opened up the scoring in the third when a one-out-out Stringer double handed the Owls the 1-0 advantage. A pair of singles by Michael Ratteree and Shane Hoelscher as well as a Michael Aquino sacrifice fly accounted for the rest of the frame’s scoring.
Three two-out scores in the fifth doubled the Rice advantage before a Bumpers double and Johnson single put the Cards on the board in the sixth.
With the loss, the Cards dropped to 33-12 on the year and saw their winning streak halted at eight games. Rice improved to 29-14 overall.
Lamar will return to action on Friday night when the Cards play host to Oral Roberts at Vincent-Beck Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
