LAKE CHARLES - Claire Miles took home the 3,000 meter steeplechase crown and Johnathon Reece grabbed the high jump title as the Lamar men's and women's track teams competed at the McNeese Springtime Classic at the Cameron Communications Complex.

Miles, who grabbed the 5,000 meter title at the Sam Houston State Quad Meet a week ago, posted a time of 11:34.70 in the steeplechase, making her the fourth-best performer in the event in school history.

"It was a very good run for Claire today," head coach Trey Clark said. "She's put in a lot of work to get back, and the last two weeks have been a good start to outdoor season for her. I think she's capable of doing even better, and I'm looking forward to seeing how she does over the rest of the season."

Reece, who was competing in his first outdoor meet since taking home Southland Freshman of the Year for indoor season, cleared a height of six feet, nine inches in the high jump.

"This was good opener for Johnathon," Clark said. "It was a real solid performance, and it puts him in good shape with about a month to go before the conference meet. He's going to continue to get better, and we're glad to have him back."

With a time of 24.57 seconds, Ashley Idunoba placed fourth in the 200 meter dash, but second among college athletes, falling to Houston Baptist's Lakesha Cameron. Sarah Shim was 10th in the event at 25.44.

Saschelle Slaughter also had a top five finish with the women, completing the 400 in 56.25 to finish fourth among college athletes and fifth overall. Elzbieta Gawron ended 10th at 57.54.

Kim Campbell added a ninth place showing in the 800 at 2:22.85, and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams ended fourth at at 46.75 and 3:50.50, respectively.

For the men, TaMar Hicks stood out with a time of 1:54.27 in the 800 to place fourth, and Zach Hicks led the way for the sprinters, ending 14th in the 100 at 10.65 and seventh in the 200 at 21.27.

"TaMar is getting better each time he runs," Clark said. "The race went well for him, and he ran a good leg in the relay as well. He's got more in the tank, and I'm very excited about the progress he made. For Zach, he had a really good run today in the 200. He's worked very hard to get to this point, and he has a bright future ahead as well."

Zach Hicks also combined with Jonathan Edwards, Trey Finnex and Wesley Williams for a third place finish in the 4x100 relay with a time of 41.66.

Ryan Kelly posted a time of 4:29.00 to come in sixth in the mile, and Le'Trey Burton made his outdoor debut with a time of 15.20 to place 10th in the 110 meter hurdles.

Fresh off winning Southland Field Athlete of the Week, Beatrice Douglas put up a mark of 18 feet, nine inches to end fourth in the long jump, and Carissa Hill finished seventh in the event at 18 feet, five inches.

Jared Parker was the only other athlete to pick up a top 10 finish, coming in seventh in the pole vault at 15 feet, one inch.

Both teams will return to action next week as a number of distance runners will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays and the rest of the squads will head to Houston for the Rice Invitational.
