June 20, 2013
BEAUMONT – Joe Wade put the finishing touches on his career on Thursday as the highly-decorated Lamar distance runner took home the Southland Conference’s Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year award, becoming just the fourth in league history to take home both the indoor and outdoor honor in the same season.
A graduate student out of Isle of Wight, England, Wade was working toward a second master’s degree with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. On the track, he bounced back from a fall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the SLC Outdoor Championships to win the 1,500 meter run the following day, notching his fifth career conference championship in the process. Versatility proved to be his most valuable asset as he completed the year with the top league times in the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs as well as the steeplechase.
Wade joins Sam Houston State’s Chris Cralle and UTSA’s Bryan Wolfe as the only male athletes to sweep the awards. The former accomplished the feat in 2011, and the latter did so in both 2005 and 2006. On the women’s side, former Card Clerc Koenck laid claim to the feat in 2008.
In addition to Wade, four other Cards were named to the Southland’s All-Academic team for track and cross country.
On the men’s side, the Matt Johnsen and Sam Stabler were honored. Johnsen, a 2012 All-American in cross country, was also an all-conference honoree in the outdoor 10,000 meter run. He finished the season with top five SLC marks in both the 10K and the 5K.
Stabler, who also ran cross country, posted the third-best conference times in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs outdoors as well as the mile and 3,000 meter runs indoors.
It marked the second straight time that both Stabler and Wade made appearances on the squad and the third for Johnsen.
Becky Gough and Claire Miles grabbed automatic berths on the women’s squad. Gough, who completed her master’s in kinesiology with a 4.0, earned the indoor individual title in the 3,000 meter run and picked up all-conference honors in the indoor mile run as well as both the outdoor 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs. Miles, who took home All-SLC honors in cross country, repeated the feat in both the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs. The London native earned her master’s in special education with a 3.66 GPA.
