BEAUMONT – Brett Brown couldn’t have asked for a better start to Wednesday night’s game against Houston Baptist, but a second inning home run was all the Huskies needed as the Lamar baseball team fell 8-1 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Brown, a native of Nederland, struck out the first four batters he faced, but a Curtis Jones single and C.J. Jarvis three-run blast keyed a four-run rally in the second to put the Huskies on top.

Brown would leave the mound after the third, picking up his first career loss. He finished with three hits allowed and six strikeouts.

Brad Picha was the engine of a Cardinal offense that was kept at bay for much of the evening. The senior finished with three of LU’s four hits, and Zach Luevanos homered in the sixth to account for Lamar’s lone score.

HBU pitcher Ross Kennell tossed a complete game and struck out seven.

Jerin Spikes stood out among the Card relievers, tossing three hit-less frames. Tom Elsom and Hunter Perry combined to allow the game’s other four runs, and the duo of Travis Moore and J.T. Autrey also appeared on the mound.

With the loss, Lamar drops to 19-4 on the season. It marked just the second home loss of the season for the Cards, with the last occurring a month ago against Washington.

HBU improved to 7-10-1.

The Red and White will look to get back on track on Friday when McNeese State makes the short trek to Beaumont to open Southland Conference play. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
