Lady Cardinals defeat Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Lamar's Alessandra Pennesi improved to 7-1 in Southland Conference singles play as she led the Lady Cardinals to a 5-2 win at Northwestern State on Saturday.

Pennesi, who improved to a team-leading 13-4 in singles competition this spring, posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Amy Williams at No. 5 singles.

Lamar's Carolina Salas improved to 12-5 in singles matches, including a 6-2 mark against Southland Conference foes with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Olga Bazhanova at No. 1 singles.

Natalia Mayagoitia and Helene Czudek also won at singles for the Lady Cardinals (9-8 overall, 5-3 Southland), who also took two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point to start the day.

Tatiana Larina and Polina Konop won at singles for Northwestern State (11-4, 5-3).

"The doubles point was huge for us today," Lamar coach David Wong said. "The ladies battled tough against a well-coached Northwestern State team."

Lamar is at Central Arkansas for a Southland Conference match at noon Saturday.

"We need to keep on fighting through the rest of the season and be ready for the conference tournament," Wong said.
