BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's team held on for a 4-3 win over visiting Nicholls in a Southland Conference match Sunday afternoon.
Carolina Maso, Natalia Mayagoitia and Alessandra Pennesi all won in straight sets for Lamar (8-8 overall, 4-3 Southland). Lamar's fourth point came at No. 6 singles as Helene Czudek won by default.
Pennesi, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Catherine Gauthier at No. 5 singles, ran her singles winning streak to five matches. She leads the team with a 12-4 mark in singles competition.
Nicholls (5-10, 1-6) won the doubles point and claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Colonels used only five players, meaning Nicholls had to default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
"Nicholls played with a lot of heart," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We were lucky to win the match."
The Lady Cardinals open a five-match road trip with a Southland Conference contest at Northwestern State at 10 a.m. Friday.
