Final Stats

BEAUMONT, Texas - Five Lamar pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Cardinals defeated visiting Texas Southern in a non-conference game Wednesday evening.

The Cardinals (6-10) held Texas Southern (9-8) to just one hit over the first eight innings before the Tigers collected two hits and an unearned run in the ninth off of Ben Coram to end the shutout bid.

"We got great pitching and solid defense, that's a recipe to win a lot of games," Lamar assistant coach Scott Hatten said. "We also got some timely hitting."

V.J. Bunner had two hits, drove in two runs and scored another to lead the Lamar attack. Garret Autrey and Seth Dornak also had two hits for the Cardinals, who pounded 10 hits, including doubles by Autrey and Cameron Campbell.

"We're starting to get better quality at-bats," Hatten said. "The guys are feeling more comfortable at the late and taking better swings."

Chase Angelle (1-0), the second of Lamar's pitchers, picked up the win, allowing no hits while walking one and striking out one. Andrew Beasley struck out three in his two innings of work for Lamar.

Lacy Jackson had two of Texas Southern's three hits. Starter Denzel Pipkin took the loss for the Tigers, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned, in five innings.

Lamar, which has won two straight, hosts UT Arlington in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Mavericks are 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

"This is an important series for us, and it's good to go into it with some confidence," Hatten said. "We just have to keep it going."
