CONWAY, Ark. - Lamar University's baseball team left town Saturday afternoon with the same number of runs it had when it arrived on Thursday.
That didn't bode well as to how the Cardinals fared in their 2012 Southland Conference-opening series against the University of Central Arkansas.
Ryan Angus hung the Bears' third successive shutout on the struggling Cardinals, and Ethan Harris went 2-for-4 at the plate and slugged a three-run home run in UCA's four-run fourth inning that put the game out of reach.
A 6-foot, 170-pound senior right-hander, Angus was in control all of the way. He limited the Cardinals to four hits - all singles - and he struck out nine batters without walking anyone. He improved his record to 2-1.
The Cardinals suffered through four three-up-and-three-down innings, running their count to 14 over their past two outings.
Lamar starter Shane Hamaker didn't make it through the first inning as the Bears jumped on him for five hits and five runs. The loss dropped him to 1-2 on the season.
The weekend sweep put the Bears at 7-6 on season and 3-0 in the conference. The Cardinals, who have lost four in a row, fell to 4-10 and 0-3.
The Cardinals will take a break from league action to play a 2 pm. game at Houston Baptist University on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they will host Texas Southern University at 6:30 p.m. in Vincent-Beck Stadium, and they will play their first home conference series against UT Arlington, beginning Friday night.
