HOUSTON - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened its spring season by dropping a 7-0 non-conference decision to host Rice University on Friday.
Rice (1-0), ranked 71st in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), did not drop a set on the day against the Lady Cardinals.
Lamar's Carolina Salas, playing her first match at No. 1 singles, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Dominique Harmath. Helene Czudek of Lamar, playing No. 6 singles, hung tough against Stephanie Nguyen before falling 7-5, 6-2.
"We played a little tight as this was our first match against a ranked team, we will continue to fight and learn from our mistakes," Lamar coach David Wong said.
Lamar returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday when it hosts North Texas in a non-conference match.
"We need regroup for our next match," Wong said. "We need to adjust and be more disciplined on our shot selection."
